RACE DESCRIPTION

The Bloody Big Swim starts at 9.00am in front of Frankston Lifesaving Club at Frankston and finishes at Mills Beach, Mornington; a distance of 11.2 kilometres.

The race is organised by the Australian Marathon Swimming Association whose aim is to promote interest in distance swim events for fun and fitness. The Bloody Big Swim is one of Australia’s longest open water swimming events and attracts local, national and possibly international attention.

You can choose to swim as a solo, duo or in teams of four. Duos and teams swim as a relay, choosing to change in times of their own choosing.

EVERY entry is required to have an Accompanying Paddler and an Escort boat..for both safety and insurance reasons; when it's flat it might seem unnecessary, but if it blows up, you'll thank us.

LIMIT TO NUMBERS

As this event is a complex one involving swimmers, paddlers and boats, we are limiting our growth each year to ensure a safe and successful event....please be aware that while we have set the closing date for registrations at January 18 2012, if our quota is reached before that time, registration will be closed for this year's event.

ENTRY PROCESS

Note from this year, all entries must be made online. Duo and Team of Four entries will be accepted on a “first in first served basis” and will require 100% completion including Support Boat and Escort Paddler details.

If and when registrations equal the quota set for this year’s event, registration will close.

CLOSE OF ENTRIES

Due to the requirement that ALL entrants have a representative at our briefing, we do NOT take entries on the day. All entries must be received by 5pm Wednesday January 18..at the latest; please note that the earlier you enter, the easier it is for us.

Please note that we are now taking ALL entries online..... Note that as we are required to place orders for race shirts well in advance of this date, we cannot guarantee shirt or size availability for entries received after December 31.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

The safety of all competitors and support crews is paramount. The Safety Committee will be responsible for making a decision on the weather conditions. As a guide, if the wind is in excess of 15 knots from a Northerly direction and the swell is greater than 1m prior to the start then the race may be abandoned.

IF the race is cancelled every effort will be made to select an alternative date, which will in most cases be the following Saturday, February 4 If the weather is again unsuitable there will be no 2012 race. In either case the organizers there will be NO refund to entrants as costs associated with running the event will have been expended at that time.

REFUNDS

All applications for a refund must be made by 1st January 2012. An administrative fee of 50% will be retained per entry for all refunds before that date. No refunds can be issued after January 1, as we will have already incurred all of our costs by that time.

INSURANCE

ALL insurance is the responsibility of the competitors.

RACE BRIEFING for SKIPPERS and swimmers.-Skippers are strongly encouraged to attend.

The 2012 Bloody Big Swim Briefing provides information on support craft management and swim rules and regulations.

With increased numbers we have now moved the pre-race briefing for the 2012 Bloody Big Swim, scheduled for Friday night January 27 at a venue to be confirmed.

A representative of each entry must attend a race briefing to be informed of the event rules, regulations and course details. It is also highly recommended the skipper of the support boat attend to be briefed about the boat drivers responsibilities.

Full race instruction, race caps, boat numbers and polo-shirts will be issued at the briefing.

Note: All entries must include support boat and accompanying paddler details completed by January 18.

Note: In addition to a Support Boat, EVERY entry MUST have an Escort paddler.

This is a team event, which inlcudes the swimmers, paddlers and boat crew. The paddler is the first and closest safety link to each swimmer, and also assists with direction, the boat is support and backup to both swimmer and paddler.

Support Boat Options

All entries require support boat information and will not be accepted without these details being complete.  See safety for more information.

The following sites can be used to assist in finding a support boat.

It is normal practice to offer to at least pay fuel costs for your support boat.

Other successes include advertising through community noticeboards, school newsletters, local newspapers.
