Event Background

The Mornington Peninsula is set for an annual Marathon swim following the inaugural event by four hardy locals over the Australia Day weekend in early 2004.

Setting off from Frankston Pier on Saturday around 8am, the four swam in two teams to arrive in Mornington with their paddling escorts just over 3 hours later.

The four swimmers, Mark Cook, Tony Frey, Leon Cox and Bruce Dixon also had a boat and support crew who kept them well fed and “watered” during the journey.

Spokesman for the group, Bruce Dixon, said they had completed the swim as a pilot for a Marathon swim which will be run on the Saturday of the Australia Day weekend next year. All the swimmers have competed in many of the popular Ocean swims, and following their successful completion of the Rottenest swim, two if them decided it would be worthwhile setting up a Marathon swim in Victoria.

“A marathon swim brings team spirit into Ocean swimming”, said Dixon, “and it allows people to compete at whatever level they feel most comfortable; be it solo, or in a team of 2 or 4 people. The Rottnest swim now closes entries in 48 hours, as there has to be a limit on numbers, and we hope that within a few years we might have the same happening with our swim. It’s a chance to raise some money for charity and have fun at the same time.

”In honour of the distance and the weekend, it will be known as the Bloody Big Swim!
